Club History

Nomads Chess Club was formed in 1972 and is a founder member of the Nottingham Chess Association.

Originally formed as Gedling House Chess Club, we moved our venue so frequently that we changed our name to Nomads in 1987.

In 2007, we merged with Fiveways Chess Club. This gave us the "critical mass" upon which to build the membership and take the club forward, when both clubs were short of players.

In 2012, after many years of playing chess at the Sherwood Community Centre, it was decided to move the club venue to The Fiveways Pub.

In June 2014, we relocated to the Horse & Groom, in Basford, Nottingham. But we only stayed a year before moving on, again.

In July 2015, we moved to the Organ Grinder pub on Alfreton Road (near Canning Circus).

This venue , like all others closed in March 2020 due to lockdown.   Like all other clubs, chess has been on “pause” for 18 months, but upon return, the pub now have other uses for the function room we once occupied.

After a “homeless” Summer, in August 2021 we have relocated to our new venue, The Embankment pub, near Trent Bridge.

Whilst we are called Nomads, we hope to remain at this venue for the forseeable future
We are fielding 2 teams this season to ensure everyone gets some league games, irrespective of playing levels.

Don't worry if you are a little rusty, we have teams at different levels to allow you to work your way up.

If you require any information in respect of joining our club, please email David Griffiths (drgriffiths@email.com) or just pop along any Monday, you will receive a warm welcome and make some new friends.
